Somos Nossos Maiores Bully!

Qual o Seu Maior Tormento? - somos nossos maiores Bully!

Your Own Biggest Tormentor?

by Davey Wavey
April 16, 2011

During yesterday’s Day of Silence, I spent some time meditating on the harassment, bullying and abuse that many LGBT people face. It occurred to me that, in addition to this external abuse, many of us (gay and straight alike) face an even more ruthless tormentor: Ourselves.

In our minds, so many of us hold an image of what perfection is – of how we ought to look, act, dress, etc. And because there is almost always a gap between this image of perfection and how we actually are, we torment ourselves. We want to be this image of perfection, and because we feel that we’ve fallen short, we carry around tremendous pain, guilt and shame.

The names that others might call us pale in comparison to the names we’ve called ourselves. The judgement, torment and abuse we inflict on ourselves can be constant and unrelenting.

But what if, all along and totally unbeknownst to us, each of us was unfolding exactly as we ought to unfold? What if the image of perfection that we carry is nothing more than an illusion fed to us by our parents, grandparents, friends, coworkers, teachers and religions? What if, in actuality, there is no gap between the way you are and the way you should be? What if, in this very moment, you already are perfection?
